Shelly Timmons: first female neurosurgeon president of AANS
Global Neuro’s Shelly Timmons, MD, PhD., FAANS, officially took office as 2018–2019 president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), during its annual scientific meeting in New Orleans (US). She is the first female neurosurgeon to hold this position and the second woman to serve as president.
“I am humbled and honored to receive this appointment and plan to work diligently to further the profession of neurosurgery through the activities of our association”, she said upon her election. “I look forward to collaborating with the bright and talented individuals in our group on refining best neurosurgical practices, advancing neurosurgical research, and providing expert education globally.”

The first Global Neuro Symposium—Neurotrauma in Shenzhen, China drew 120 participants, and an interactive, live broadcast engaged another 1,200 participants over the course of the daylong event. It was held in parallel to the Chinese Head Trauma Forum, a major nationwide conference on traumatic brain injury (TBI) management.
The symposium was led by Jiyao Jiang (China), Guoyi Gao (China), and Randall Chesnut (USA) and carried out by international faculty from the United States and Belgium, as well as local faculty from across China.

Global Neuro Essentials Course—Neurotrauma in Naples, Italy
Global Neuro will take the world stage for two events at the International Conference on Recent Advances in Neurotraumatology (ICRAN).
On June 18–19 the pre-congress Global Neuro Essentials Course—Neurotrauma, chaired by Maurizio Iacoangeli (IT) and Andres Rubiano (CO), will feature an international faculty of neurosurgical experts. Covering the current best strategies and considerations for managing neurotrauma patients, the course is based on competencies defined in Global Neuro’s curriculum.

Pre-course focuses on state-of-the-art clinical management of brain and spine trauma
On August 11, for the 3rd Joint Symposium of the International and National Neurotrauma Societies and AANS/CNS Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care in Toronto, Canada, Global Neuro, the Neurosurgery Research & Education Foundation (NREF), and AOSpine will join forces for a one-day Pre-NeuroTrauma2018 Brain and Spine Trauma Course. Chaired by Michael Fehlings (CA) and Geoffrey Manley (US), the course will cover a range of topics relevant to TBI and spinal cord injury (SCI) care. The effects of these debilitating conditions on patient quality of life are well known, and this course serves as a means to engage participants, enhance neurocritical knowledge and ensure that patients receive the best care possible.
